Clear Water. Cool Coral. Cooler You: A Campaign for Marine Conservation

Help preserve marine ecosystems and raise awareness of the seriousness of marine debris with our fundraiser campaign. Support underwater cleanup drives, hire Indian fishermen to collect plastic, and rescue and restore coral reefs. Make a positive impact on the environment today.

About the Fundraiser

I am Harshietha, an architect and a designer. I have been working closely with ReefWatch for the last few years and we are glad to announce that we have an event which I believe will help us to raise money and awareness to preserve our marine ecosystems, research and conservation across the coral reef locations.

It is important for us to save the Coral reefs to protect our coastlines from the damaging effects of waves and storms. It is also the habitat and shelter for many marine organisms. ReefWatch is on a mission to make Indians more aware of the situation and ready to bring back the original state of the ecosystem. We have begun this campaign to raise funds for the same.

The money raised will be used to

1

We are trying to conduct underwater cleanup drives, which will help us to remove waste from the ocean.

2

The scuba divers would need a Scuba diving mask, a snorkel, scuba diving wet suit, compass, and fins. The total cost for all the scuba diving gear will be 10-15k on the budget side and more for a high end setup.

3

We are hiring Indian fishermen to collect plastic from the ocean so that it can be recycled and reused as roads.

4

We are rescuing, restoring and rehabilitating the coral reefs that are naturally broken by attaching it to a metal structure, and then doing a process based on electrolysis that helps it to grow 7 - 12 times faster.

We want to raise awareness about the seriousness of marine debris and by its cleanup to leave behind cleaner, cooler and healthier waters. We want the event to inspire ordinary people to make a difference to our environment.

Objective

Our event will educate and celebrate the marine life of India.
We want people to join this noble cause and fight against water pollution and climate change.

About ReefWatch

ReefWatch Marine Conservation is a non-profit Organization established in 1993, as a Public Charitable Trust under the Societies Registration Act. ReefWatch is involved in research, edu- cation and outreach activities. These have included coral reef monitoring in the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, documentary films, beach clean ups in Mumbai, SCUBA training for scientists and education programs in schools across the country.

ReefWatch has served as a Member of the National Board for Wildlife (Government of India) since May 2007. The organization has had the privilege of working with many dedicated and inspiring individuals in the fields of science, government, filmmaking, photography and the media. Its efforts are targeted towards protecting and nurturing the diversity of life in India’s coastal and marine environments.

Objective

ReefWatch’s strategy for the conservation of our marine spaces is simple. We must first know our ocean, and then use this knowledge and ensuing enthusiasm to inform sustainable management.

Our objectives are broken down into three parts: Education, Research and Management.

1

Education

To raise awareness about the ocean’s beauty, biodiversity and the essential ecosystem ser- vices it provides us with, especially amongst Indian youth through:

• Developing and conducting programs that introduce the youth of the nation to the wonders of the marine world and anthropogenic pressures upon the aquatic ecosystem, through hands on underwater experiences as well as classroom sessions.

• Empowering coastal youth with knowledge, skill development, training and ave- nues for change to a better, bluer, planet.

• Creating multimedia content on the topic of India’s ocean to raise awareness amongst the public.

2

Research

Conduct or facilitate the research necessary to scientifically inform management and conser- vation of our marine systems:

• Conduct, fund and facilitate targeted research towards increasing our understanding and effectiveness of conservation methods in the marine sphere.
• Improving the current capacities of research facilities and efforts in the

islands of India by collaborating with foreign scientific and conservation institutions.

3

Management

Advise government, regulatory bodies and local community groups to sustainably use their environmental resources:

• Providing support and advocacy to the concerned ministries of the Gov- ernment of India and local authorities towards creating more effective policy and implemen- tation methods for the preservation of marine areas and organisms.

• Creating avenues for various groups of stakeholders to become involved in the management and conservation of essential marine and coastal ecosystems at the com- munity level.

Goals

A first of its kind project in India, ReefWatch seeks to launch a conservation program restor- ing and rehabilitating coral reefs in the Andamans. This program involves rescuing naturally broken coral fragments that would otherwise become smothered in sand and die. These are reattached to a robust substratum, such as a metal structure.Securing these fragments to an unmoving frame increases their survival rates. This in time will grow into an artificial coral reef.

The next step will be to add mineral accretion technology to the artificial structures. Based on the principle of electrolysis, a mild electric current generated through a solar source will be passed through the iron frameworks. This will ensure quicker accretion of calcium carbonate, which helps the reef grow 7 – 12 times faster than normal and leaves the coral with more of an energy budget that it can use to survive warmer temperature spells and coral disease.

Solution

To protect the ocean and the life within it, through education, research and management, so that our children and theirs will continue to have access to this source of richness and beauty that sustains us today.

Takeaways

  1. Planning and brainstorming are crucial: The success of any fundraiser depends on careful planning and brainstorming. This project shows the importance of generating and evaluating different ideas, selecting the best option based on its feasibility, potential impact, and alignment with the cause, and then creating a plan of action to execute it effectively.

  2. Understanding the target audience is essential: It is critical to understand the characteristics and preferences of the target audience to create an effective fundraising campaign. This project demonstrates the importance of knowing the age group, lifestyle, and interests of the audience to develop an appropriate strategy that can capture their attention and inspire them to contribute.

  3. Experiential events can be impactful: This project highlights the potential of experiential events such as movie screenings, contests, and community cleanups to create a connection with the cause and encourage participation. Such events can not only generate funds but also raise awareness and inspire people to take action.

  4. Visual communication is powerful: The project shows how visual communication can be a powerful tool for creating awareness and inspiring action. The use of realistic images and effective colour schemes can help convey the urgency and importance of the cause, making people more likely to contribute and support the campaign.

  5. Collaboration is key: The success of the project also shows the importance of collaboration and partnerships. Working with local organizations, venues, and sponsors can help increase the reach and impact of the campaign while reducing costs and improving the quality of the events.
